Discussions, networking, and determining a needs assessment for an adult literacy program began in November of 2008; by June of 2009 the first tutor training was presented and R.E.A.D. welcomed the first students.
R.E.A.D. is a nonprofit, 501(c)3, volunteer based program developed to provide adult literacy services for individuals who live in or near Northwest Ottawa County, Michigan.
What we do:
Volunteer tutors provide free, one-on-one tutoring for adults with minimal reading skills.
Any person who is at least 18 years of age and committed to improving his or her ability to read is eligible for 1 1/2 hours of tutoring per week.
The sessions are held in a public location that is determined by the tutor and the student.
R.E.A.D. credits its current success to committed volunteers, community support, and the collaboration and assistance of the Loutit District Library and the Spring Lake District Library.
Our goal is to maintain a sustainable and effective program that will continue to adapt and expand in its mission to meet adult literacy needs in Northwest Ottawa County and surrounding areas.
